60 ways eCommerce brands are automating right now

You don't have to read this newsletter from cover to cover. Scroll down to the section that is currently annoying you - support, fulfilment, email, content, bookkeeping - and take what works. The rest is waiting when you need it later.

Before we start, briefly the most important thing:

Every automation follows the same logic: Trigger โ†’ Processing โ†’ Action. An event triggers something, data is checked or processed, an action is executed. Everything else is complexity layered on top of this basic principle - whether you use n8n, your own script or a ready-made SaaS tool.

And before you build anything yourself: For almost every use case below, there is already a specialised provider whose main job it is to solve exactly this problem. "I could build that myself too" is not a good reason to go ahead and do it.

Customer Support / Email & Lifecycle Marketing

1. Where is my order? (WISMO) โ€” AI automatically detects tracking requests, extracts the order number from the ticket, retrieves the shipping status and sends a personalised reply with a tracking link. One of the most common and easiest use cases.

2. Return & refund requests โ€” Tickets are categorised by topic (return, refund, exchange), the customer is immediately given the next steps, and the order is automatically set to "Return in progress". This accounts for 30โ€“40% of all tickets in many shops.

3. Address change requests โ€” Automatically checks if the order has already been shipped. If not: the address is updated directly in the shop system. If yes: an honest response with the remaining options.

4. Order cancellation โ€” Checks fulfilment status, automatically cancels and refunds if still possible - or sends return instructions if the order has already shipped.

5. FAQ auto-replies โ€” Shipping times, return periods, ingredients, size guide: packed once into a knowledge base, then answered fully automatically.

6. Ticket triage & routing โ€” Categorisation by topic, urgency, customer type - combined with customer history from the shop for more precise prioritisation than mere rule filters.

7. Lost shipment flow โ€” No new tracking scan for X days? Customer is proactively informed while an investigation is automatically launched with the courier in parallel.

8. Duplicate order detection โ€” Detects duplicate orders within a short period, flags the newer one and proactively asks for clarification before shipping.

9. Collaboration / B2B inquiry handling โ€” Recognises terms like "cooperation" or "wholesale", replies with an intake form and forwards internally โ€” even outside of business hours.

10. Post-resolution CSAT survey โ€” Automatic customer satisfaction survey after ticket resolution, low ratings automatically trigger a follow-up before the customer churns.

11. Abandoned cart emails โ€” Time-staged sequence (e.g. 1h / 24h / 72h) with a personalised reference to the left-behind products. Typically wins back 10โ€“15% of cart abandoners.

12. Welcome flow โ€” Multi-part sequence for new subscribers, tailored to the origin of the lead. One of the highest ROI flows overall.

13. Browse abandonment โ€” Triggers when someone views a product multiple times but does not add it to the cart - informative tone instead of hard selling.

14. Post-purchase email flow โ€” Goes beyond the order confirmation: care instructions, manuals, matching recommendations - strengthens loyalty and reduces returns.

15. Review requests โ€” 7โ€“14 days after delivery, ideally based on the actual delivery date. Can be held back if the customer created a support ticket in the meantime.

16. Win-back campaign โ€” Reactivates customers who haven't purchased for 90+ days, personalised based on their last purchase, then removes inactive users for list maintenance.

17. Back-in-stock notifications โ€” Waiting list for sold-out items, automatic notification when back in stock - right at the moment of highest buying intent.

Lead Gen & Marketing Ops / Fulfilment & Logistics

18. Lead capture โ†’ CRM sync โ€” Every lead source (ad form, popup, checkout opt-in) automatically lands cleanly tagged in the CRM, with an instant personalised first response.

19. AI-generated ad copy variants โ€” Multiple headline/hook variants per campaign, based on historical performance data.

20. UGC-style video generation โ€” AI avatars present products without the need to book real creators. Fast iteration for testing.

21. Smart popup timing โ€” Dynamic trigger timing instead of immediate popups - exit-intent, scroll depth, time on page. Can double or triple conversion uplift.

22. Loyalty program automation โ€” Points, tier upgrades and reward emails run automatically; targeted nudges just before the next tier.

23. Dynamic discount banners โ€” Segment-dependent offers in real time instead of flat-rate discounts that put unnecessary pressure on margins.

24. Social comment moderation โ€” Scans comments for complaints/spam, hides or flags for review, answers simple questions directly.

25. Shipping label creation โ€” Automatic label creation after payment receipt, optionally with automatic selection of the cheapest or fastest shipping route.

26. Order routing to warehouse/3PL โ€” Automatically forwards orders to the appropriate warehouse or fulfillment partner based on country, product or capacity utilization.

27. Tracking update notifications โ€” Proactive status updates with every carrier scan, with a customised tone in case of delays. Can reduce WISMO tickets by up to 30%.

28. Order tagging โ€” Automatic tags like "international" or "fragile" prevent special cases from getting lost in the normal process.

29. Supplier order sending โ€” Automatic reordering from the supplier when below a threshold, quantity-adjusted to sales speed and delivery time.

30. PDF/email order entry โ€” AI parses B2B orders from PDFs/emails and enters them directly into the shop system - up to 90% less effort in order entry.

31. Fulfillment error alerts โ€” Aggregates errors from multiple marketplace dashboards into a single central view with instant notifications for critical cases.

Product & Inventory / Content Production

32. Multi-channel inventory sync โ€” Stock is kept in sync in real time across all channels - eliminating overselling, one of the most expensive multi-channel mistakes.

33. Low-stock alerts โ€” Dynamic thresholds instead of flat-rate warnings, adapted to sales velocity and delivery time.

34. Product listing creation from feed โ€” New supplier products automatically become ready-to-use shop pages - including variants, prices, and images.

35. Cross-channel listing sync โ€” Maintain once, display consistently everywhere, with automatic correction suggestions in case of discrepancies.

36. AI product description cleanup โ€” Existing texts are analysed, missing attributes added, and weak phrasing improved โ€” prioritised by traffic.

37. Dynamic pricing rules โ€” Price adjustment by margin, competition, inventory, or season - within clearly defined upper and lower limits.

38. Competitor price monitoring โ€” Automatic price comparison with key competitors, combinable with dynamic pricing for a fully automated process.

39. Product recommendation engine โ€” Learnings from purchase history show suitable cross-sells - shops report a 10โ€“30% higher AOV.

40. AI blog post generation โ€” Weekly SEO article based on trending keywords, including product links - manual effort remains limited to the review.

41. Trend-based content topics โ€” Identifies search trends in your niche and automatically fills the content calendar with the most promising topics.

42. Product description writing โ€” First drafts for new products directly from specifications and brand tone - significantly accelerates the launch.

43. Social media scheduling โ€” Captions and hashtags automatically generated from product images, publishing at the optimal time.

44. Email copy generation โ€” Multiple subject line and hook variants per campaign, tailored to previous performance per segment.

45. Review aggregation & response โ€” Aggregates reviews across channels, detects patterns, and suggests responses for negative reviews.

Research & Insights / Finance & Admin

46. Market research automation โ€” Weekly scanning of competitor websites and industry blogs, compactly summarised directly in your inbox.

47. Supplier comparison โ€” Automatically consolidates offers, terms, and delivery times from different suppliers into a single overview.

48. Social trend monitoring โ€” Monitors hashtags and keywords, identifying emerging topics before they go mainstream.

49. Unified sales dashboard โ€” Automatically pulls revenue, margins, and channel performance from all sources, proactively reporting anomalies.

50. Churn / at-risk customer detection โ€” Automatically flags inactive customers and prioritises who should be reactivated first.
53. Bookkeeping sync โ€” Every order and refund is automatically transferred to the accounting system and correctly categorised โ€” including special cases like partial refunds.

54. Affiliate / commission tracking โ€” Purchases are automatically assigned to the correct partner, commissions calculated, and statements sent automatically.

55. Invoice generation โ€” Legally compliant invoices directly after fulfillment, including country-specific mandatory details - particularly relevant for B2B.

56. Billing dispute handling โ€” Automatic ticket creation during payment disputes, with deadline tracking to ensure nothing is missed with chargebacks.

57. Tax report preparation โ€” Sales data automatically aggregated by country and tax bracket, ready for VAT returns or tax advisors - particularly valuable under OSS regulations.

Before you build: two questions

Is it even worth it? Do the maths: (minutes per incident ร— incidents per month) รท 60 ร— hourly rate = the monthly cost of the problem. Compare this with the ongoing costs of automation. Under 1 month payback period โ†’ build it, no discussion. Over 6 months โ†’ only with a strategic reason.

Is it really repetitive? If every case requires individual judgement, it cannot be automated in a meaningful way. And: automating bad processes makes bad processes faster - not better. Sometimes simplifying is more worthwhile than automating.

Automate what costs you the most first - not what sounds the most interesting.
